Today, the Sandy Hook Pilots are on the leading forefront of safe and efficient harbor operation. Modern diesels drive specially designed vessels equipped with the latest electronics, giving the Sandy Hook Pilots the remarkable reliability of service for which they are known. Their fleet ranges from 24-foot rigid inflatable boats to the 182-foot NEW YORK and the 145-foot NEW JERSEY-a fleet of more than a dozen modern vessels.
The Sandy Hook Pilot Base is in Staten Island, New York. Pilot Stations are maintained at the entrance to the Port of New York/ New Jersey by Ambrose Light, City Island by Long Island Sound, and Yonkers for the Hudson River.
The Pilots make more than 12,500 transits a year on numerous and diverse types of vessels as all kinds of interesting traffic continues to flow through the harbor, carrying the basic necessities for the regional population's daily lives-and livelihoods. In all, the harbor generates many billions of dollars in annual economic activity and more than 250,000 jobs.
